Caledonia Forward and the e2 Framework: Sparking Entrepreneurial Growth

As a coach in Caledonia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, the e2 framework implemented by SMIF’s REV program has provided the much-needed structure to help us begin to shape and propel our economic development efforts. Now, we have a refined approach, supported by research and best practices, that is already making a tangible impact. The e2 framework has notably expanded our efforts to engage with businesses in a more standardized and effective manner, allowing us to build stronger connections and facilitate growth.
Rev Caledonia
In just the first nine months, we’re seeing promising results. Caledonia Forward and the City of Caledonia Planning Commission were newly established, each with a focused mission of community improvement. Additionally, the recent SMIF grant award is already reshaping conversations within our Chamber of Commerce, helping it prepare for a more dynamic, forward-looking future, and hiring an eNavigator position to support these efforts. Our community hosted two gatherings, an Entrepreneurial Event in August, and a Caledonia Forward “After-Hours” in October, creating opportunities for local leaders to connect and learn.
The importance of this program to our community cannot be overstated. Caledonia is rich in potential, and this initiative brings together influential voices in the community, fostering critical discussions and sparking ideas that might otherwise go unspoken. By working within the e2 framework under the Caledonia Forward banner, we are cultivating innovative ideas that will drive our growth and resilience in new, lasting ways.
Looking to the future, we aim to connect with current business owners through outreach visits, and listen to their needs and bring relevant education and resources to support them. We also hope to fill downtown vacant storefronts and support new entrepreneurial efforts. Our community has a growing number of enthusiastic entrepreneurs, and we believe a vibrant downtown is within reach. Long-term, we envision population growth, an increase in housing, and the development of complementary industries that will enrich our town. Our hope is that Caledonia Forward will outlast the three-year REV program, serving as a pillar for future progress and development in Caledonia. Together, we’re building a community where ambition and opportunity thrive.

Caledonia started participating in SMIF’s Rural Entrepreneurial Venture (REV) program in 2024. REV is a proven entrepreneurial development program designed to advance small town economies through a targeted business approach. REV provides coaching, resources and connections throughout the visioning and implementation process as each community explores what economic development means for their town.
